2nd Annual Howard Graff Memorial Scholarship

Brother Howard Graff of Oriental Lodge # 33

The Howard Graff Memorial College Scholarship acknowledges the life and legacy of Brother Howard Graff. A philanthropic, family-man, committed to the principles of Freemasonry, Brother Howard was committed to helping people and communities. As past Grand Chancellor of the Grand Lodge of Illinois and a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, he is credited as having helped bring DeMolay to parts of the Balkans and to countries there once ravaged by war. Having served as Chairman of Masonic Charities, Brother Howard was instrumental in fund-raising and creating valuable networks worldwide. He was also active in his community’s many interfaith initiatives.

On October 19, 2016, the Village of Skokie, Illinois proclaimed the day as “Howard Graff Day” in recognition of his work and as a valued member of the community in which he lived for over 60 years. Despite facing many health-related challenges throughout his life, Brother Howard was committed to the needs of others and learning about our world which he wanted to make better.

The scholarship is awarded annually and is worth $3,000. Applicants who can prove a relative is a Freemason receive an additional 10 points to their total score. The scholarship selection process is based on the applicant's academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and a response to the following essay prompt:

"The trivium—comprising grammar, logic, and rhetoric—is a classical foundation for developing articulate and reasoned thinkers, values that Freemasonry also holds in high regard. Discuss how mastering these arts can enhance leadership qualities and decision-making in modern societal roles."
